Saatchi Is Wrong

Not completely wrong, mind you, but he has made some obvious mistakes.

1. It is only possible to win an election from the area around the median voter, which normally falls within the ‘centre ground’.

2. Politics is about far more than Left and Right nowadays. The left-right spectrum is only a very, very basic way of looking at politics in the modern world.

3. It is possible to have ideology without forcing it into everyone’s faces.

4. Is Conservatism a true ideology anyway? An ideology has to have a vision of the “good society” - Conservatism is far more interested in making the best of what we have than looking at abstract principles.

  1. Glass House

    Absolutely spot on.

Centre = where most people are = who you need to win elections.

Of course, the position and policies on the center gradually move over time, but you’ve got to deal with the world as it is.
