Smoking Ban To Be Enforced From July

The smoking ban, approved by Parliament in July , will come into force on 1st July 2007. From 6am on that day, it will be illegal to smoke in virtually all enclosed public spaces, including pubs, clubs and restaurants.

It really is ridiculous that we are not to be allowed to choose whether or not we want to smoke or not, or even to be in a smoky place! I dislike smoking and having to breathe in second-hand smoke, but I just don’t think that legislating smoking out of public places is the right way to combat it.

It would have made far more sense simply to ensure that whether a pub allows smoking or not is well signposted at the entrance, and then let the market forces dictate whether smoking or non-smoking pubs prosper. Let the people make their own choices in life!

There’s nothing worse than arriving at a company and seeing people puffing away on the front doorstep because they have been shoved outside. I’m a non-smoker too, I must say I support this, although like you, I agree with free choice. I guess it will have to be restricted to people’s homes.

I Concur.. Free choice is essential.. The very institutions of democracy and human rights are questioned when certain laws are forced upon people because a bunch of parliamentarians thought it the right thing..
