You Can’t Be A Veiled Teacher

The Muslim teaching assistant who sparked a row over wearing her veil in the classroom has been dismissed by the school in which she worked.

I’m not surprised that she has been sacked from he job. She cannot do it properly if she has to wear a veil every time there is a man nearby. If she wishes to wear her veil, then it is her responsibility to seek out employment where she will not work with men.

Especially since she had had her face uncovered by the veil at the job interview and subsequent training day, where men were present, then the school could not possibly have known that she would then insist that her face must be covered when men were present. Had she been interviewed in the veil and employed with the knowledge that she would wear her veil when male colleagues were present, the school would be very much in the wrong. But since, presumably, she decided to adopt the veil after becoming employed by the school, it is her responsibility to find a job that allows her to keep up her religious practice.

If Mrs Azmi wishes to continue working with children, I suggest that she look for a place at a girl’s school - and at least make any school understand her religious practices before they give her a job.
