Many Students Are "Ignorant" And "Clueless"… About Condoms At Least
According to a study, “[m]any university students in the UK lack basic understanding about condoms“. Of the 2,200 students who took part in the survey:
- One in 10 did not know how to put a condom on properly
- 16% of students mistakenly believed using two condoms at once was safer than using just one.
- Almost a quarter think other forms of contraception protect from sexually transmitted infections.
- One in 10 believed condoms should be stored in a warm place, which may lead them to perish.
And, most disturbingly:
- Seven respondents claimed they thought condoms could be washed and re-used.
How on earth have some of these people got to university without knowing this stuff for crying out loud? Even if they have got all of their sex education from teen magazines, they should know more than that!
The author of the report said:
“University students are no smarter than many other young people when it comes to sexual health.
They are just as likely to believe myths about condoms and to have got more of their sex education in the playground than the classroom.
We spend a fortune educating students, but leave them ignorant about key issues in their adult lives. It’s hardly surprising that rates of sexually transmitted infections are soaring.” (The Guardian)
And she has a point. University students aren’t any smarter when it comes to sex than any other group of young people. But you would also expect them to have a intelligence to look it up if they weren’t sure. That’s precisely what the internet is for!
I am absolutely shocked by the results of the survey. Especially by the seven who believe that you could reuse a condom. I know recycling is fashionable at the moment, but sheesh!
