Was Ted Heath Gay? Who Cares?!

Rumours that Ted Heath was gay, started by Brian Coleman, a Conservative London Assembly member, made in an online column for the New Statesman, have flooded the media. He claimed that Heath was “supposedly advised to cease his Cottaging activities in the 1950s when he became a Privy Councillor”.

How is this important, however? Who really cares? I certainly don’t. What Heath wanted to do with other consenting adults in his own private time is none of my, or anyone else’s, business.

If he was gay, however, as Matthew Parris thinks likely, then it is another tick in the “minority representative becomes Prime Minister” box, again for the Conservatives.

Was Heath gay, or not? Does it matter in the slightest? No. As a society, we really should have moved away from this position whereby it matters what someone does in the bedroom. Private lives are precisely that - private.
