I’m No Longer In The UK
… according to the BBC anyway.
After getting home from my camp this weekend and having missed Doctor Who on Saturday night, I went to download it on BBC iPlayer… only to get the message below.
Is Watford no longer part of the UK? Have I missed something that happened over the last couple of days? Or are the BBC just being thick?

UPDATE: BBC iPlayer has now decided that I am in the UK after all - but that it’s servers are busy. Which doesn’t really help me much in my desire to download and watch the programme! It does appear to just be crap now, since it obviously doesn’t have the capacity to cope with the demand.

This is why I never bother with such services but use the exceedingly naughty site at http://www.eztv.it
The BBC seems particularly inept where Doctor Who and iPlayer are concerned - I wrote about my own frustration with the service a few weeks back, when they uploaded the previous week’s episode instead of the one that had just broadcast. It was available within an hour by illegitimate pirate means, so if one person somewhere with a video converter on a computer can do that, why can’t the BBC get its act together? Then, given that I’m a Mac user, I can’t download, I can only stream - and yet a rebate on my licence fee is not forthcoming until the Mac ability is added ‘later this year’. Mind you, I think those people who don’t have computers (yes, it’s true, many don’t!) should also get a rebate on their TV licence.
The clue in the ‘TV’ bit of ‘TV licence’. All these extra services are wonderful, for those who can access them, but the BBC should focus on making services that everyone can access. It’s galling that if I did want to download a show, I’d have to pay via iTunes. That, or break the law. Stooooopid.
By the way, ‘non-politics’… My blog? Erm, while I don’t cover political issues all the time, preferring a more pot pourri approach to blogging, I cover political stuff a heck of a lot… Maybe you need a category like, ‘politics and a bit of other stuff as well’? >;-)
Well you can be in “politics” or “non-politics” - your choice!
