Work Till You Drop
Apparently, we should never stop working. We should never retire, and never enjoy the fruits of our labour. Instead, we should just work, work, and work - then use equity release schemes to raise money from our homes to pay for care.
As it is, we work for at least 40 years before retiring. With the way it’s going, I don’t expect to retire until I’m pretty much 70. It simply won’t be affordable until then. And by then, I’ll have been working for nearly 50 years. Only about 49 to go… Man, that’s just depressing.
In that case, what is the point of life?
We work to live. We don’t live to work. We shouldn’t need to be working every day for our entire lives just so that we can then die.
Blunkett is right that it isn’t the government’s “prime responsibility” to support the elderly. But he is wrong that this means that we should work until we drop.

What I’ve never understood about most people is how they work to the exclusion of pleasure just to accumulate money.
Personally my view is that you should work just hard enough to ensure you don’t starve and no more.
I’m not sure Blunkett is a good one to talk about continuing to work. He’s had to quit his job twice (and his continuance in the Commons is far from assured after the next General Election).
Indeed, his slogan could be: “Flunk it like Blunkett”…
