iTunes Royalties

Add a comment

itunes-logoApple is threatening to shut down iTunes if the amount of royalties that they must pay is increased. American music publishers want rates to rise from 9 cents to 15 cents per downloded track, a 66% hike.

If this is passed by the Copyright Royalty Board in Washington DC, iTunes will shut down. This is the largest online music store in the world, and if this shuts down where will all those people who are buying their songs go? Almost certainly to illegal download sites.

The music industry is trying to get their claws into the download market and leech it of life. If they charge lots in royalties, people will not buy them, but download them illegally.

Music companies appear to have no understanding of the modern world, and are stuck with an out-moded view of the world. If they push this through, they will lose out in the end.

It actually exists - but not for long.

The Male Sexual Organ

This post at Liberal Conspiracy about the cock is required reading.

I’m talking, of course, about the booming industry of surgical penis ‘enlargement’, the nearest male equivalent to labiaplasty. We’ve all had versions of those relentless spam emails, offering in poor English to furnish us with a magnificent schlong for the price of a university education.

Yes, it’s fucking political. Male sexual neurosis is massively damaging, to feminism, to society, and to men themselves. This is not male apologism, or backsliding, it’s one feminist’s request for more discussion of a damaging socio-sexual taboo, in the context of a blog post in which I get to shout ‘COCK!’ a lot.

This is a massively important subject. And it’s a brilliant excuse for me to post the Penis Song.

But after watching it, go and read the whole post.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is to be remade, without the blessing of its creator, Richard O’Brien.

Remaking a cult classic like this is always risky. Even more so considering the quality of the original. In the end, this remake will either be bloody brilliant or absolutely abysmal.

Whilst we wait to find out, here’s two of the most iconic songs from the film:

Remember the 80s

Due to a variety of reasons, in the past week I’ve not had to chance to glance at a newspaper (Well, slight lie, I read a few pages of The Daily Mail yesterday, but I doubt that counts anyway), read an article on a news website, or watch a news bulletin. Nor am I likely to get chance to do so today.

But, as TD is away trying to recreate this video (one presumes), I sort of feel obliged to give people something to do over the weekend instead of reading this blog.

So, people of a certain age, cast your mind back to the 80s. That girl you liked in school. How did you express your admiration? Well, you found a Maxwell, put it into your tape deck and either by carefully recording off the radio so you hit pause just before Bruno Brookes started talking (come on, we all did it); or using a double take deck and taping it across from the original if you actually had it.

Mixtapes have died out with the introduction of CDs and mp3s - it’s rare you find a new car with a Cassette deck. It’s possible to add files onto a CD, or even have a mp3 playlist, but the romance simply isn’t there. There was skill in making a mixtape that there isn’t in a CD. The reassuring clunk of the mechanism. There was just something about it all.

Thankfully, someone has seen the lack of this, and made the 21st Century version.

OK, so an internet mixtape from mixwit might not have quite the same idea - there’s nothing to hold after all. But you can see the tape and things moving around - it’s quite fun.

So, on the wet June weekend, if you’ve nothing better to do - go and have a play. You can save them all to show off (see mine here - I often use them for Musical Bites, particularly the alphabetical playlist feature) - perhaps to that girl behind the bikesheds who might otherwise get a boring old CD…

Eurovision 2008

Add a comment

Tonight is Eurovision. Unlike last year, however, I won’t be getting drunk and watching it. Or even getting drunk or watching it. Which is kinda a pity.

At least our entry to this year’s Eurovision entry is pretty good. Not that it matters, as all the voting is political rather than with any reference to the actual song at all.

Though, unfortunately, Ireland’s glovepuppet Dustin the Turkey didn’t make it through to the final with his piss-take of the whole contest.

Saturday was the night when this years British entry to the Eurovision Song Contest was chosen.

At the very least, it is a better song than last year’s embarrassingly bad entry.

It just needs to be “Eurovisioned” up a bit. Hopefully we’ll end up doing better this year as well… hey, stranger things have happened… haven’t they?

Beautiful Music

I have just come across some extremely beautiful music, performed by an amazing singer: Callaghan. She has just realised her first EP, which can be bought here or downloaded from iTunes.

There are a couple of her songs available to listen to on her website, but for a taster here is a video of her performing:

Super Tuesday

Add a comment

It’s Super Tuesday in America. The day when 22 states are voting in their primaries to select their candidates for the Presidency. It really is a crazy system they have.

It is down to Barack Obama v Hillary Clinton for the Democrats and John McCain v Mitt Romney for the Republicans. McCain is expected to emerge triumphant from the Republican race today, but no outright winner is expected to emerge for the Democrats.

If I had a vote, it would got to Obama. He is the future of America.

UPDATE: What if the whole world have a vote? [Hat-tip to Norfolk Blogger]
